Coping With a Child Diagnosed With ADHD

It can be very difficult when dealing with a child that has ADHD.  It takes more than regular patients but there is help and support out there for you.

You are not alone with this issue. For information on this disorder, use any internet search engine and find information on the disorder itself and the medications that can be prescribed to your child.  There are support groups and people that you can talk to if you are in need of help dealing with this. Services are available through YCM and CMO agencies for therapy and other services for your son or daughter.

It is ok to reach out for help. Helping yourself means helping your child and your family.

If your child has been evaluated by the child study team at school, please be certain that his/her classification is correct if  he/she has been diagnosed with ADHD, especially if that is the only diagnosis.

Financial help may also be available through the Social Security Disability Office. I have been told that the process can be long. My advice would be to have all the necessary documentation when applying and be patient.

Good luck with your situation and remember to do your research.  Knowledge is key.

Summer's Coming And Camp's Expensive

Summer is coming and we all need things for our kids to do when school is out. Summer camp would be nice but as a single parent can also be difficult to afford. Camp costs these days are high and do not always provide enough if any alternative funding to lower income families.

These are other alternatives that you can try to make sure the kids are supervised while out of school:

-  You can check the school to see if a free summer program is available

-Contact your local recreation department to see if there are scholarships for summer programs in your area

-Get permission to post a babysitting ad at the local high school to solicite the help of a local teen

-Check your neighbors to see what they are doing with their children for the summer to get ideas

Some people have childcare covered but can't afford the coveted summer vacations that will be talked about once school is back in session.  Day trips are just as good as extended get-aways.  The kids just want to have fun. Don't over engineer the ideas and lengths you think you have to go to in order to please them. You summer get away can be as close as the next state or town.  Plan day trips to different places like:

-Amusement parks

-Museums

-Carnivals

-Parks and pools

-Lunch and a matinee

-Trip to NYC

-Trips to Philadelphia

Make some of those trips an overnight stay. Just pick a nice town that is a few towns away or the next state over and spend the night at a local hotel and go site seeing. Any hotel with a pool will surely bring a smile to most little ones.
